House Krahn
Renovation of an Atrium House

The building was built for the international building exhibition "Interbau 1957" in Berlin Hansaviertel as one part of a group of connected houses by german architect Johannes Krahn. These houses are situated at the edge of the so-called "carpet building area", linking the housing with the surrounding park. The open building structure, formed like a comb, was not separated from the park so that private and public space melted into each other.

The architects vision did not last for long. Nowerdays the gardens are separated from the park by walls so that the close relationship between courtyards and interior spaces are the specific quality of these buildings.

We refurbished the outer fassades towards their historical origin but changed the interior structure significantly. By demolishing interior walls a spacious living area was created that, zoned into living-, kitchen-, eating- and library-area, encircles the main courtyard and creates multiple new views.

The historical design of the terrace doors with black coloured frames and white coloured openings was the starting point of the new interior architecture that is based solely on light and dark materials. Standing a Wenge-wood parquet, wardrobe, kitchen, shelfs, and benches are designed as autonomous objects made of dark wood and schiststone. The parquet floor and a larch boarding in the courtyards meet steplessly by forming a continous surface which interweaves interior and exterior.

Johannes Krahn, 1908-1974, was working as an architect and urban designer on an international level. Mainly he designed buildings for culture and administration uses. His most known works have been the reconstruction of the Pauls-Church Frankfurt (1946-1948), the german embassy in New-Delhi, the german house on the Cite Universitaire in Paris (1953-1955), the „Bienenkorbhaus“ at the Konstablerwache (1956), the building of Philipp Holzmann AG (1968) and the City-House (1974) in Frankfurt.
