Vilnius in the Air
Presentation of the Program 'Vilnius- Cultural Capital of Europe 2009‘

The Lithuanian capital Vilnius will be European Capital of Culture 2009. In the run-up to the event the cultural program is presented in various European cities. The first build-up took place at the Council of the European Union from 24.11.2007 until 05.12.2007.

To house a video installation of a group of Lithuanian artists, we have designed a temporary pavilion. The initial idea was to create a dark
projection space, which transcends the closeness of the classical black box. Another focus laid on easy transport and quick build-up.

A cubic PVC-cushion, floating in the air, carries a sailcloth-cover which hangs down as far as 90cms above the ground. In the middle of the
space, formed by this cover, video projectors are showing synchronized films on the four inner sides. Visitors enter the space either by ducking
down under the fabric or by entering through a slit in it. Black carpet absorbs the daylight and connects the inside of the pavilion with the
outside space around it, where foam seats and information desks create an area for rest and interaction between the visitors.

The flying pavilion is attached to the ground by four thin steel wires. To transfer buoyancy forces from the thin PVC foil into the wires, a grid
of powerstrips is placed between cushion and cover. The counterweights are made of steelplates, placed invisibly under the carpet.

Assembling or disassembling can be arranged by four people within one day. The construction material is stored in a medium-sized box-wagon
for transportation. One-way-carpet and helium are ordered on site.
